Read back of bag or box for recommended amount to use for each size tree or shrub. Heathers only need to be feed lightly. Make sure to not get the fertilizer next to the trunk or stems place fertilizer out at the drip line. (drip line is referred to as where the rain or water will drip off of leaves or branches)

PRUNING Prune your flowering shrubs as soon as they have finished blooming (before they set buds for the up and coming season) Shrubs will typically set buts a few months after blooming. Hebes can be trimmed as soon as finished blooming and then they may rebloom later in the season. Trim Heathers as soon as they finish blooming (winter bloomers approx. March Summer & late summer trim in Oct.) Non blooming shrubs & trees can be trimmed in the spring or fall. Fruit trees trim in the late winter (Jan. & Feb.) Cut spent blooms off of perennials to encourage continued blooming. Hydrangeas-some not all bloom on old wood so be careful to not trim of next years flowers.

WATERING If you have a drip or spray system installed, Honeyman will set it for you at time of installation and give you instructions on how reprogram and turn off in the winter and to start up in the spring. If you are hand watering you will need to water at least 3 times a week May thru Oct. In the dead of summer with our north winds you may need to water more often. Small shrubs need at least 3gals every time you water medium shrubs 5gals each time and trees & large shrubs need 10gals each time. Make sure the water soaks in and doesn’t run off, once sand dries out it is very difficult to get it to absorb water again.

Evergreens will drop some needles in the fall & winter. If a plant is going to die due to transplanting it will normally happen in the first 3 months. Don’t expect a lot of new growth the 1st year. Plants sleep, creep & then leap.

Application for 12 Months of Giving

85089 Hwy.101 S. We have found over the years that kids are not aware of where & how vegetables get to their dinner table, besides their parents shopping for them at a local grocery store. I was lucky little girl being raised on a farm south of town (Elliott’s Hilltop Acres Farm) my mom would take our small animals to school when my older brothers & sisters were in school, when I started 1st grade in 1964 the school decided to make an annual field trip to the farm and to this date all Siuslaw 1st graders goes to the Elliott Farm in the spring. I wanted to be able to provide kids with some of the same experiences that my parents gave me, teaching me the differences between fruit & vegetables, but also these kids will be the “Next Generation” of shoppers at Honeyman Nursery. Keep pole beans and mustard away from them.

•

• Cabbage, celery, dill, onions, and potatoes are good companion plants. Landscaping will be holding a seminar on Saturday Feb 6th at 11:00 am on how to grow and care for roses in our coastal environment. Barbara and Shayne will be there to answer your questions and explain some of the difficulties of growing on the coast, pruning techniques and giving you hints on how you still can have gorgeous roses. We will give you ideas on how to identify and correct issues before it becomes a problem with them. The bareroot roses arrived a couple of weeks ago and are ready to be planted in the ground and as a lot of our customers do plant them in containers also. Pre-registration is not required, but if you could call and let us know, that would be greatly appreciated! Honeyman Nursery & Landscaping 85089 Hwy 101S. We are staying inside painting and tiding up the barn and retail areas.

January

Happy New Year now the work begins again at the nursery.
We all had time off between Christmas & It's always colder at the Nursery so we have already put everything in the greenhouse that is tender.

If you have tender plants that need to be protected, we suggest using remay to cover then.
Keep birdbaths filled with clean water.
Water shrubs under the eaves, the cold weather pulls the moisture out of the plants
If you planted Spring Bulbs and they are starting to come up already, that is OK the cold weather will not bother them in fact they like cold weather.
<img width='1' height='1'
